During the Second World War, a US soldier stole a collection of German paintings, but eleven pieces of these are now set to return back to a German museum in the little town of Pirmasens. It is thought that these oil paintings were taken as US soldiers were on the way home from Germany as World War II came to a close. The small town of Parmesens had received huge damage by bombing during the war, while many of its museums were hidden under a local school building.

Beth McFadden had been the one to research of the history of the oil paintings and made the link of their origins. Interestingly, her great uncle, US Army Sergeant Harry Gursky, was stationed near Parmesans.

Why is some art so expensive?

Why is some art so expensive?

When it comes to art everybody has a different opinion is what good art is, what great art is, and what just plain bad is. Unfortunately, for some art, those boundaries keep changing. Take a look at graffiti. There was a time when all graffiti was just an ugly mess made by disenfranchised youth…..or bums with nothing better to do we would hear said. Yet some of those graffiti spray painting bums escaped arrest and ended up being asked to pain murals in their city. Suddenly, pop culture had turned what was once considered only garbage into an art form.

Truth is, some graffiti is still nothing but displays of angst from angry teens, but some of it is…..well, it is really good! And it has gone mainstream. You don't have to have kids in your home to see 'graffiti art' everywhere. It is on t-shirts, skate boards, school bags, book covers, bill boards…..it is everywhere.

The Local Artist

The Local Artist

The local artist is thriving in the guarantee of no money and no fame. It really is bleak out there for local artists of all colors and creed. Everyone has talent these days. Everyone is a photographer or a painter. Everyone's grandmother has a set of oil paints and sells prints of paintings of their house cats. I've put myself out there for years as a mural painter, and have managed only to find a few jobs in all those years. One would think I simply lacked the ability to thrive in such a competitive market, but it's simply not true. Jaws have dropped for years at the sight of my portfolio. The truth is everyday Americans can't afford murals or any other commissioned works. I'm a good artist, but they're starving too. There are plenty of avenues out there for the commercial artist to lend his abilities to advertising executives for money. The exploration of ones abilities as an artist simply are for pleasure. There is no longer need for money and no more fear for the lack of fame.

Painting is Not Just a Hobby

Painting is Not Just a Hobby
© faith goble

Whether it's acrylic, water colors, or oil painting I find myself cast away on a river that runs parallel with my life stream. Painting hasn't always been a passion of mine. When I was in high school I barely touched the stuff. I was a pen and ink man. I loved pencil drawings too. I still have a great love affair with black and white drawings, but getting older and more mature as an artist I need more for my experiments in the visual realm of art. I need color. I need vivid and vibrant color to bring complexity of mood to my work. Painting is my avenue for enlightenment and I'm armed to the teeth with brushes paints and a spray can or two. Sometimes drab and rusty earth tones are what makes my heart sing. The dusty hues point out flawed characters of a story untold and binds them to the canvas for all the world to see and know.

Oil Painting Lessons
© Mickael Casol

Oil painting lessons could be the thing you need to close that gap between the picture in your mind's eye and that seemingly clumsy and talentless hand of yours. Oil painting lessons can be a bit on the pricey side, but there is usually someone around with a reasonable price of twenty to thirty dollars a lesson. That's including materials. You may find that just a few oil painting lessons will give you the techniques you need to achieve the desired result your looking for. A good instructor is worth the cash and they usually can tell you a good place to get whole sale paint supplies. Oil painting lessons just give you a boost, the first step in the right direction, but ultimately you decide where and how far you want to go in oil painting. Oil painting lessons are just the place to pick up the tricks of the trade so many artists hold dear.
