The Local Artist
05.30.10

The local artist is thriving in the guarantee of no money and no fame. It really is bleak out there for local artists of all colors and creed. Everyone has talent these days. Everyone is a photographer or a painter. Everyone's grandmother has a set of oil paints and sells prints of paintings of their house cats. I've put myself out there for years as a mural painter, and have managed only to find a few jobs in all those years. One would think I simply lacked the ability to thrive in such a competitive market, but it's simply not true. Jaws have dropped for years at the sight of my portfolio. The truth is everyday Americans can't afford murals or any other commissioned works. I'm a good artist, but they're starving too. There are plenty of avenues out there for the commercial artist to lend his abilities to advertising executives for money. The exploration of ones abilities as an artist simply are for pleasure. There is no longer need for money and no more fear for the lack of fame.
